I first saw Daredevil Christopher Wright at a Daytrotter show. There were like fifteen of us there, none of whom (other than Sean) had ever heard of these guys before. They drove down from Eu Claire, Wisconsin, to play to this roomful of curious pizza eaters, and they blew everyone away. We wouldn’t let them off the stage. They ran out of songs. They seemed surprised that we liked them, genuinely and pleasantly surprised, but we were enthusiastic and convinced them we were sincere. We bought all the music they were selling, including a 3 song CDR that included this track.
Well, last week they finally released their new record (we’ve been waiting forever), and it’s awesome. This song is on it. It was produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and has some of his trademark sparseness. But I think this track brings it all to the table. Fantastic multi-part harmonies that echo the Beach Boys, wonderfully professional classical musicianship, a vocal storytelling style akin to The Decemberists (though without the silly references to seafaring and gymnastics), and enough changes in tempo and instrumentation to put the Fiery Furnaces to shame.
“If ever a civil rights movement was needed in America, it is for the Republican Party. If ever we needed to start marching for freedom and constitutional rights, it’s for the Republican Party. The Republican Party is today’s oppressed minority, and it knows how to behave as one.”—Rush Limbaugh, MLK of the 21st century
“Science is nothing but trained and organized common sense, differing from the latter only as a veteran may differ from a raw recruit: and its methods differ from those of common sense only as far as the guardsman’s cut and thrust differ from the manner in which a savage wields his club.”—Thomas H. Huxley
“It’s like I can’t possibly fuck all the women in the world, but I can at least penetrate them if they listen to this song… That song going into your ears is like me penetrating your orifice.”—Jarvis Cocker
Maybe when people ask me if I’m going to vaccinate my child, I should just send them this link. Usually I just tell them that not only am I going to vaccinate my child, I’m going to start spraying down playgrounds with Rubella to show them a lesson… via ennuiwillrockyou
It’s a beautiful day here, and this is hammock music. Unfortunately, I don’t have a hammock, so it will have to do as a few minutes of calm before I break out the electric mower for its first use of the year.
