Dissent of the day, from “Wad City”:

I still miss that blinking red light. I remarked as such to a colleague earlier today, when it took me a half-hour to realize I’d missed his call because I’d stepped out of my office for a few minutes. This would never have happened with my BlackBerry, because the minute I’d have sat back down at my desk, the light would blink and I’d know to check it.

Even if we concede that it’s a good feature, though, is it really one of the top three reasons to use a BlackBerry today?

1. “Dissent of the day” - I like where we’re going with this.
2. “concede” - Even better. ;)
3. Well, exactly.

The fact that the LED light is top 3 says everything about how few reasons there are to choose a BlackBerry anymore. Most of their earlier tentpole features, such as push email, enterprise software, business-friendly security features, and decent keyboards (and key software) have been absorbed or overtaken by others

The red light is really all that sets them apart anymore, isn’t it?

Actually, no. The Droid X has a notification light. So does the EVO 4G, the Droid Incredible, and the HD2. The Nexus One has a glowing trackball indicator. The Galaxy S doesn’t, but someone’s developed a hack. The Pre doesn’t.

Also, as far as I know, neither KIN had a notification light.
