Watched this last night. Man, I wish it was better. I so wanted to love it.
I think it was coming from exactly the right place — darkly comedic and ultra-violent and perhaps a bit mad — but it just didn’t work. Despite a lot of gore, it never got close enough to the edge. It needed a bit more Taxi Driver (or maybe King of Comedy), a bit less Napoleon Dynamite. The low-budget techniques made it feel cheep instead of gritty, and entire scenes felt rushed, like they just went with whatever happened in the first take.
Ultimately, though, what did it in was Rainn Wilson. So fucking dull. No edge at all, no matter how crazy the eyes, no matter how loud the yelling. For a psycho, he’s the most boring character you’ll ever see.
But Ellen Page? Holy shit was she fantastic. I’ve never seen a movie that was so full of life with one person on screen, so utterly devoid of it without. She plays a comic nerd with a filthy mouth, a love of violence, a crazy psychotic vigilante laugh, and a thing for cosplay sex. Her pint-sized fury is hilarious and just the right amount of crazy. She totally saves the movie. I’d pretty much recommend it on her performance alone.
